The basic framework of a poker game is that cards are dealt out to players and stakes are set. Players place bets based on the guesses as to who holds the best card combination. With each fresh bet the stakes rise. The stakes are commonly referred to as ‘the pot.’ The game ends with a showdown with the best hand winning the stake. Players may be induced to give up play by bluffing. Those who get convinced that the opponents’ hand ranks higher, often opt out to cut losses. It is this feature of the game that has given rise to the expression ‘poker-faced,’- the ability to lie without giving it away by a tell-tale facial expression.
The United States Printing Company and later the New York Sun, commissioned a study into the origins and varieties of poker. As a result of this study, a definitive set of rules for poker, was drafted in 1904. This set the ball rolling and more publications appeared explaining the intricacies of the game.
While draw and stud poker were the two basic styles, a third style referred to as Texas Hold ’em, came into being. Then there was the high-low style where the pot’s contents were shared equally by the highest and lowest hands. This started a style which came to be known as lowball in which the lowest hand wins the stakes.
In general all poker games start with a shuffle. The next step is the cut of the deck, then the players ante before the dealer deals the cards. To ante means to bet a percentage of the minimum bet. The amount collected in this manner goes into the pot. Different colored chips are used to denote differing denominations of money. Rules govern the betting order and the dealing order.
With each round getting over, betting moves clockwise around the table. Players have options to either check, call, raise or fold. To check means that you stay in the game but do not bet, this option is open only to the person whose turn it is to bet first. Once a bet is placed other players can only call, raise or fold. To call means that you match the most recent bet and stack an equivalent amount of colored chips in front of you. When you ‘raise’ you increase the amount of the previous bet. If disappointed with your hand you can ‘fold’ or drop out of the game.
If you are playing draw poker you can draw new cards from the deck and place your bets after receiving your initial cards and after drawing new cards. If you are playing stud poker you play with the initially dealt cards, some of which are face up and some face down. Different kinds of games can be played by varying the number of cards to five or seven and by varying the pot to high or high/low.
