What is Poker?

Poker is a card game, the most popular of a class of games called vying games, in which players with fully or partially concealed cards make wagers into a central pot, after which the pot is awarded to the remaining player or players with the best combination of cards.

Though a card game, poker isn't just a card game - it is many card games. The majority of poker games do share some common features, especially betting in rounds and the ranking of hands. Poker is commonly played in cardrooms (often within casinos) and now online too. The games played in cardrooms seem to divide into stud games, draw games, and flop games.

POKER STRATEGY

Poker Strategy is an essential component to winning at poker. If you ask any good poker player whether they have a strategy, you will get the same answer, of course! Strategy is all about the art of getting opponent to commit his chips to the pot, particularly when you have the best hand. It involves deception to let your opponent think he has the best poker hand when you are holding a good hand. Players will very often bluff when they think that you have not got the cards to call with.

There are a huge variety of poker chips available, for beginners and pros alike. The major difference is in the quality of the chips. Plastic poker chips are inexpensive and fairly rugged, but often are lighter-weight and prone to fading or scratching over time.

Higher-end products feature clay composite poker chips (like the casinos use) -- these clay chips will typically last longer than the plastic chips, plus they simple feel more substantial when you're holding one in your hand or pushing a stack of chips across the table.

POKER CARDS

First a person called the dealer gives each player a certain number of cards, called his hand. Then each player can make bets by putting his money in the center of the table. This stack of money is called a pot. After the players finish betting, the pot is given to the player with the best five cards, the best hand, according to the rules. To play poker, it is important to understand which hands are better than other hands.
